Llyn Crafnant

Llyn Crafnant is a beautiful mountain reservoir in Snowdonia, set above the town of Trefriw it’s situated where the Gwydir Forest meets the Carneddau mountains. Under the care of Natural Resources Wales Crafnant is now a popular place to visit in North Wales.

The view from the north east end of the reservoir is one of the best lake/mountain combinations in the entire National Park. The lake itself is only ¾ of a mile long but there are loads of surrounding trails that provide many miles of exploring fun.

Llyn Crafnant Forest Trail Route

Whether running, hiking or just gently wandering, this Llyn Crafnant Loop is perfect for lowering the heart rate with some easy trails and beautiful scenery. The short section of forest in roughly the middle of the trail route is particularly spell binding, with moss covered trees, streams and small waterfalls aplenty. Early morning visits here can be wonderful when we catch the lake on a still day – the reflections are mesmerising. Midday sunlight filters through the forest section of this walking/trail running route really well, again well worth timing a visit to enjoy this at it’s best.

Llyn Crafnant Loop | Running & Hiking in Snowdonia National Park 3D Map

1. Llyn Crafnant has a great public car park (with toilets) a short distance from the north tip of the lake. From the car park entrance we cross the road and initially walk up a dirt track to the north (away from the lake). This soon turns back on itself and the wide forest track continues for about a mile and a half.

2. After the track descends through a few neat left and right bends, a narrow footpath turns up the right into the woodland. From here all the way down to the side of Llyn Crafnant is some truly special forest, with moss hanging everywhere, carpeting every trunk and branch with it’s lush greens. Small streams run through the trees and there are a number of incredibly beautiful miniature waterfalls.

3. On reaching the Crafnant road and turning left (south west direction), the rest of the Llyn Crafnant Loop is via a very well maintained track that follows the lakeside all the way back to the start. There’s a great little vantage point with a wooden bench not far from the end of the lake which we love for a final coffee break overlooking the water to the forests on the other side that we started off in.

4C Snowdonia Loop

15 mile circular walk

Despite being a chunky 15 miles this walk takes a tour starting at Llyn Crafnant, heading to Capel Curig then towards Ogwen Valley. It follows a man made stream between the mountains to Llyn Cowlyd and descends back through the forest to Crafnant.
